While we can’t ease any ethical guilt for supporting a company known for its shady foreign-product sourcing and unfair treatment of employees, we can help take the sting out of tossing a discounted organic item into an oversize plastic shopping cart while wheeling through aisles of plastic crap, labor unions be damned. 1. Walmart is helping to make organic more affordable. When Walmart joined forces with Wild Oats back in April, its goal was to drive down the price of organic food across categories—from salsa and pasta sauce to quinoa and chicken broth. And they’ve succeeded: You can score USDA-certified organic packaged foods for about 25% less than at most grocers and retailers. 2. Walmart is bringing organic to a whole new audience. For years, organic food has been seen as an upper-middle-class luxury, available only to those who could afford to pay a premium for it. Now that Walmart—the biggest of the big-box chains—is offering organic food for less, it’ll likely prompt more people to start buying organic and looking into its health and environmental benefits. 3. The big retailer sells products with bona fide organic certification. Sure, there are plenty of issues with food labeling, from the fact that “all-natural” means squat to the reality that some “grass-fed” certifications have such slack regulations that you may not be getting an animal that’s even licked a blade of grass. And while Walmart still stocks its shelves with foods carrying these misleading labels, when it comes to organic, its inventory is legit, with mostly products with the USDA Organic or CAL Organic cert. 4. Walmart’s orders will help large-scale organic producers convert to 100% organic production. Currently, many organic food manufacturers produce some organic products and some conventional. Experts say that Walmart’s massive orders will help many of these larger-scale companies run 100% organic, which could ultimately help them cut costs and offer even more organic options. 5. Walmart’s new focus on organics won’t hurt the little farmers as much as you might think. The reality is that consumers want one-stop shopping—even those who care a lot about where their food comes from. (Admit it, running to two different farmers’ markets and three grocery stores isn’t exactly sustainable shopping.) So, since we’ll always buy some of our food at a grocery store, isn’t it a good thing that Walmart at least offers more organic options?
