The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) provides accreditation in accordance with ISO/IEC Guide 65 for product certification programs to ensure that the marketplace can gain confidence for their activities. In this video, representatives from several accredited organizations share their experience. https://www.ansi.org/Accreditation/product-certification/Default The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the official U.S. representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and, via the U.S. National Committee, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and is a U.S. representative to the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). The Institute oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector: from acoustical devices to construction equipment, from dairy and livestock production to energy distribution, and many more. ANSI is also actively engaged in accreditation - assessing the competence of organizations determining conformance to standards. ANSI accreditation is nationally and internationally recognized as a mark of quality and assures that employers can have confidence that the certificate holder has completed the prescribed course of study. There are client testimonials from Gary Minks, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for TV Said America, which is headquartered in Munich, Germany. The company has electrical safety programs, SQF programs (safe quality food), ACO program, and their Energy Star program. The company uses data from their own labs, or other EK approved labs to issue certifications for compliance with energy star requirements. Minks supports ANSI and says, “Any accreditation provides confidence in both the competent and impartiality of the certification body. We chose ANSI for a couple of reasons. One is they are signed to international accreditation from multilateral agreement, and that’s something we want to provide to our customers- that international acceptance. Another thing with ANSI is they provide a wide variety of accreditations. So we can reduce our cost by having audits that cover a multitude of programs at once so it’s more efficient for us.” Another testimonial is from Bob O’ Gorman, President of Automotive Lift Institute. In 1998, the ANSI-designated safety standards, sponsored by the Automotive Lift Institute, began to need 3rd party validation by an OSHA accredited nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL). It was natural for this organization to take the next step to seek ANSI accreditation. “In terms of rigor and thoroughness, the ANSI accreditation process is second to none. Earning and then maintaining ANSI accreditation, is ALI’s strongest quality and integrity statement that we can make to the industry.” says O’ Gorman. “In 2008, ALI acted to protect the lift industry, as well as the DUYI’s, from false claims of compliance certification. Accreditation by ANSI as both a credit standards developer, and a product certification organization were key elements in the organization’s success in the court room that led to a standing federal court order against a particular manufacturer making unsubstantiated claims.” Gary Minks concludes that “One thing we enjoy about ANSI is the partnership approach they have to things. At the end of the day, we are all looking for the same thing, which is certifications that can be trusted, and that’s for all the stakeholders. Whether that’s our clients, our customers, regulators, or other scheme-owners.
