I explain everything you need to know about about the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing. Specifically, you’ll learn how you benefit from measures cloud providers use to protect their assets and what the inherent disadvantages are of cloud computing. When cloud providers look for a new site to build a data center, they have trained staff that selects locations with a low risk of natural disasters such as flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and forest fires. The high availability and disaster recovery features of cloud computing allow for continuous service when losing a data center to accidents, plane crashes, violence, terrorism, and even nuclear threats. Data center operators take care of the undifferentiated heavy lifting when it comes to power management, networking, air conditioning, physical security, and general data center operations. Because cloud providers manage compute and storage for thousands of businesses, they can take advantage of economies of scale for uptime and durability as well as patching and software versioning and security. Additionally cloud computing has the usual benefits of moving capital expenditures into operational expenditures, being able to use elasticity and serverless computing, and the ability to expand to a global presence. Something that cloud providers almost never mention is the fact that your business is legally dependent on their business. This legal entanglement is typically positioned as a “shared responsibility model” and you do well to fully understand where the cloud provider’s responsibilities end and yours begin. While cloud providers have a higher capacity to deal with denial of service attacks and hackers, they also are more prone to these type of attacks. While most cloud providers provide generous guarantees around keeping your data secure, keep in mind that obtaining a warrant for the cloud provider may have different legal requirements than obtaining a warrant for your business. There are also reports of accounts being hacked and then recovered where previously deleted data was fully restored. This means that deletions may not be as permanent as you would have expected. Vertical and horizontal scaling are part of the elasticity benefit, however they are limited to the boot time of virtual machines. While serverless computing is the next generation of cloud computing, it is limited to the features the cloud provider offers.
