Natural Resource Project: Natural Resource Soil: Constanza, Nedy and Isabela. Questions: 1. What is a natural resource? (N) (C) Natural resources are the product that humans don’t make, things that we get from Nature. Examples of natural resources are soil, air, water, plants, and animals. Natural resource is a very important component of the environment. 2. How do we use soil in everyday life? (How does it help humans?) (I) (N) Soil is one of the most important natural resources on land ecosystems Soil is a basic natural resource needed to grow plants, forests and crops needed to produce food for animals and humans. Soil is used to produce fields, and from these fields we can get food. Some examples of these foods are tomatoes, lettuces, potatoes, and broccoli. The soil is the basis where plants and threes can grow. From trees we can get wood to make desks, tables or chairs, or wooden houses. In the soil we can produce food for animal like cows, chicken, pork, goose or goat. 3. How this natural resource is being abused or misused? (I) Soil can be contaminated by: a) Solid Waste: We can have soil abuse when we have solid waste accumulated on the soil. like rubbish, papers or plastics or food o computers. b) Pesticides and fertilizers. (c)We can have soil contamination from application of pesticides and fertilizers to control insects on crops. Pesticides can damage the environment and human health. They can produce nausea, skin irritation, gastroenteritis, or heart illness, headache or fatigue. c) (N) Chemicals. Soils can be contaminated with chemicals from industries like mining industry or others. Chemicals can produce problems in the respiratory system in human or cancer. d) Deforestation. (I) Soil can be miss-used if we cut down tree for wood for construction or farming. 4. How can we conserve this natural resource? (c)-To conserve this natural resource we have prevent cutting down trees, and burning garbage that damage the soil. Do you know that soil need 100 years to produce 1 cm of soil in 100 m2. Please take care of our soil! We could reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers on crops. We could produce new soil by composting with fertilizers and microorganisms. 5. What would happen if we did not have this natural resource? (N) If we do not have soil we will not have threes and plants, or very small plant form hydroponics crops. More importantly we will not have food for animals or humans. 6. Are there any current issues regarding the distruction of this natural resource? (I) Yes, we have some problems related with soil, we have abandoned soil from the mine waste, we have soil with high level of contaminants, and very high level of salt. How we persuade people to use this resource more responsibly? (C) - We should develop laws to regulate and control the use of soil. - We can make publicity about not using Wood to reduce deforestation of forests. (N)- We should care about trees: for each plant you cut down you should plant trees newones. - We could separate Garbage at home to make possible recycle it For example you can recycle the bottles we use, boxes, clothes or bags. - (I) We could make publicity about reduce and recycle garbage in the TV, radio, or News. - We could educate children from school, teenagers from Universities, adults and teachers. - (C) We would organize a competition “Recycling to reduce soil contamination make up your own machine”(as the fair at Universidad Católica del Norte) - We would organize the competition: make up you your own song about soil caring”. - And finally we should organize the competition “making up your story or poem about caring about soil and plants”.
