Destruction of the Ozone Layer The Ozone layer is a layer of the Earth's atmosphere which contains high concentration of ozone. Our planet will not be able to sustain life without it. Ozone Layer plays an important role in absorbing biologically harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted by the Sun. The majority of the atmosphere's ozone resides in the stratosphere, with the biggest concentration 20 to 25 km above Earth. The layer is being destroyed by man-made substances. The substances are Chlorofluorocarbons, chemicals found mainly in refrigerants, solvents and propellants. CFC gases had damaged the ozone layer, creating a huge hole through which ultraviolet rays could penetrate. During the 1970s, scientists discovered the chemicals known as CFCs, which can reach the stratosphere and destroy ozone. Frank Rowland and Mario found that CFC gases destroy ozone and showed the process. The CFC gases rise up into the ozone layer, where ultraviolet light breaks the compounds apart and releases chlorine. A chlorine atom steals an oxygen atom from an ozone molecule (O3), creating oxygen gas and chlorine monoxide which effectively destroys the ozone molecule. A single chlorine atom can break from its oxygen atom and destroy 10,000 more ozone molecules. CFC's are very stable: they can last for decades in the atmosphere. Effects: •Higher chance of getting skin cancers and sunburns from UV rays •Weakening of our immune system •Loss of biodiversity in oceans, lakes and rivers •Global Warming
